 The characteristics of ceramic abrasives made by Sol-gel method

Ceramic abrasives made by Sol-gel method belong to sintered abrasives, whose grain size is very small, which is only 100~500nm, just being a few hundredth of the crystal size of ordinary corundum abrasive grains. A 46# grain ceramic corundum abrasive contains hundreds of millions of grains.

During grinding, the conventional fused corundum abrasive grains are flattened and passivated after being rubbed off on the working surface. With the grinding force, the abrasive grains are easily detached from the abrasive tools, and the service life is short. While by sol-gel method, the entire wear process of ceramic corundum abrasive is also the self-sharpening process of the abrasive particles.

During the service life, the fine grain on the surface layer of the abrasive grain is detached from the abrasive grain by grinding force, and the new sharp micro-grinding blade is continuously exposed, so that the abrasive grain is always in a sharp state. Abrasives made of ceramic abrasive enjoy a long life, good self-sharpness, with high cutting efficiency and being uneasy to burn workpieces.

The ceramic abrasive made by sol-gel method differs in the abrasive fracture behavior due to its different microstructure. Ceramic abrasives are characterized by intergranular fracture failure, while traditional electrofused abrasives are mostly fractured by transgranular fracture. The abrasive toughness of ceramic abrasives is much higher than that of conventional electrofusion abrasives.

The chemical composition of ceramic abrasive made by sol-gel method is purer than white fused alumina, whose impurity is much less, and the hardness is higher. Its average fine microcrystalline structure, high toughness and micro-crushing properties put it into wide use in grinding,tool steel, various alloy steels and other materials which are difficult to process .

The characteristics of abrasives made of ceramic abrasives

It has sharp grain of strong cutting ability and high grinding efficiency, with good shape retention of the grinding wheel, which is used for precision grinding and profile grinding. The grinding wheel has high durability and a long service life, which is 5~10 times of the ordinary ones. The replacement frequency is low, which reduces the auxiliary processing time and downtime, and is beneficial to the use of CNC automatic machine tools in order to achieve automatic production.

The grinding wheel has good self-sharpness, which is not easy to block, so it can maintain stable grinding performance, reducing the correction amount (about 1/3 of the general corundum grinding wheel), improving the production efficiency. There is no need for special grinding equipment and correction devices, no special requirements and corrections for grinding equipment in CBN and diamond, neither is grinding fluid so it is easy to promote and put into use.
